The delay had been caused by many port calls; disease broke out before arrival in Pictou; people moved to temporary accommodation on beaches; were in quarantine for 3 months; forty three needed help from Emigration Agent to get to Montreal; thirty six obtained help from Societies and other funds. Some passengers were going to Zorra (Upper Canada) to join friends.

The passenger list was compiled at Pictou on the vessel's arrival. One of the customs officials at Pictou commented that the Captain of the Ellen 'acted indeed onto one and all of them the passengers more like the head of a family than a Shipmaster. No praise that they can bestow on him can be too great'. The vessel had been chartered by the Duke of Sutherland. A head tax was levied on all passengers. A dispute broke out because the families who went to PEI had to pay twice.
